The ancient Hindus were known to be highly intellectual
and sensuous people. One of their cardinal principles
was that there is no dividing line in human personality
between the mind and the body. The mind is body and the
body is mind. Also, that if beautifying the mind is to
beautify the body, the converse is equally true.
Beautifying the body is to beautify the soul.
The Ayurvedic system of medicine provides a fundamental
understanding of the five basic elements of nature.
These elements express themselves into three operating
principles within the physiology referred to as the
three Doshas -Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Individual
constitution, which is acquired at birth, is expressed
through Ayurveda in terms of these three doshas and
Ayurvedic medicine draws upon its rich traditions of
herbs and roots to effectively balance these.
Ayurveda believes that the body produces certain toxins
that are harmful if they are not flushed out regularly.
The skin forms a large organ, which helps the body to
rid itself of toxins and impurities. Ayurveda advocates
three precise steps for this detoxification and
cleansing process- Snehana, Swedana and Snana. Snehana
extracts toxins from the body with the use of scrubs,
wraps and packs. Swedana goes a step further, and here
detoxification takes place through saunas and steam
baths. Snana or the bath, is the last step in this
holistic cleansing process.
